More information about the Perama Cave
The caves were formed naturally centuries ago. In 1940, during the Italian war, they served as a refuge for the local people who seeked protection from bombardment.
In 1945 the first scientific exploration of the caves was carried out by a famous couple called Anna and Ioannis Petrohilos who had also explored some other famous caves in Greece.
The Perama cave falls into the category of horizontal caves and the length of its routes is 1km. Its overall size is 14,800m2.
There are plenty of stalactites and stalagmites on which a variety of colours are reflected making it a really spectacular view. Bear teeth were discovered in the caves. It was dedicated to the god Pluto and goddess Persefoni.
